Virginia Oyster Country’s, “Taste of the River Life this Fall,” program invites visitors to experience our culture, natural beauty and how the oyster transitions from the waterman to the table. This partnership between Lancaster, Middlesex & Gloucester Counties proudly makes up Region 6 and much of Region 5 of the state oyster industry’s taste regions.
VOC is a destination for the visitor who is looking for that experience of real oysters, real people and the real Virginia. We can fill that quest for an authentic culinary, historical, and recreational get-away. Collectively, VOC shares a unique section of coastal Virginia, rich in cultural heritage - from the earliest Native Americans to today’s working waterman, and an abundance of natural resources from the York, Piankatank and Rappahannock Rivers which all flow into the Chesapeake Bay.
Our program’s aim is to offer authentic experiences such as rides with watermen operating their traditional Chesapeake Bay deadrise boats from the Chesapeake Waterman’s Heritage Program, tours of educational aquaculture facilities, learning about sustainable environmental projects, visiting oyster farms, participating in culinary demonstrations/tastings and attending a variety of oyster related events and festivals.
• Chesapeake Watermen’s Heritage http://watermentours.com provides the experience of harvesting oysters firsthand on an authentic Chesapeake Bay deadrise boat in the open waters and eating them freshly shucked minutes out of the water.
Oyster reefs are being constructed in Urbanna Creek through the collaboration of non-profit groups, government, schools and environmental companies to clean the water naturally while restoring the natural shoreline growth.
