As winter gives way to warmer days and blooming flowers, Gloucester, Virginia, prepares to welcome thousands of visitors for the 39th Annual Daffodil Festival on April 5th and 6th, 2025. Held along the picturesque Gloucester Main Street, this beloved springtime event promises a weekend packed with live music, unique vendors, delicious food, historical reenactments, and family-friendly activities that celebrate the rich heritage and natural beauty of the area. Whether you’re a longtime resident or a first-time visitor, the Daffodil Festival is an unforgettable experience that showcases the heart and soul of Gloucester.
A TRADITION ROOTED IN HISTORY
Gloucester’s love affair with the daffodil dates back centuries. When settlers first arrived in the area in the 1600s, they brought with them daffodil bulbs from their English gardens. They quickly discovered that the region’s mild climate and fertile soil were perfect for growing these cheerful blooms. Over time, daffodils spread from the grand gardens of Gloucester’s historic homes to the surrounding fields, eventually earning the county the title “Daffodil Capital of America” in the 1930s and 40s.
Though the daffodil industry has ebbed and flowed over the years, the flower’s significance in Gloucester has remained strong. In 1987, a dedicated group of volunteers, in partnership with Gloucester Parks, Recreation & Tourism, revived the community’s spring celebration, creating what we now know as the Daffodil Festival. Nearly four decades later, the festival continues to grow, drawing visitors from across the region to admire the blooms and partake in the festivities.
The 2025 Daffodil Festival promises to be one of the most exciting yet, with a packed schedule of events and activities designed to appeal to visitors of all ages.
No festival is complete without great music, and the Daffodil Festival delivers in spades. Throughout the weekend, multiple stages along Main Street will host a variety of live performances from local bands, dance troupes, and solo artists. Expect an eclectic mix of genres—from bluegrass and folk to rock, pop, and country—ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Be sure to check the festival schedule for performance times and locations.
Artisans, crafters, and local businesses will line Gloucester Main Street with over 200 vendor booths offering a wide array of goods. From handcrafted jewelry and unique artwork to home décor and specialty foods, the vendor market is the perfect place to find one-of-a-kind treasures. Many vendors will feature daffodil-themed items, making it easy to take home a piece of the festival’s charm.
Bring your appetite because the Daffodil Festival is a foodie’s paradise. Dozens of food vendors and trucks will offer everything from classic festival fare—like funnel cakes, kettle corn, and fresh lemonade—to gourmet dishes showcasing local ingredients. Seafood lovers can indulge in lobster rolls and crab cakes, while those with a sweet tooth can savor homemade pies and decadent desserts. No matter your taste, you’ll find something to satisfy your cravings.
History buffs won’t want to miss the reenactments and demonstrations by the 7th Virginia Regiment of the Continental Line. These dedicated historians bring Gloucester’s colonial past to life with authentic costumes, weapon demonstrations, and storytelling. Visitors can interact with the interpreters, learn about life during the Revolutionary War, and even witness mock battles that capture the spirit of 18th-century Virginia.
New for 2025, the VA250 Mobile Museum will make its debut at the Daffodil Festival as part of Virginia’s 250th-anniversary celebrations. This traveling exhibit offers a unique, interactive experience that highlights the state’s rich history and cultural heritage. Through multimedia displays, artifacts, and educational programs, visitors of all ages can gain a deeper appreciation for Virginia’s role in shaping the nation.
We are excited to welcome portrait artist and instructor, Jesse Burgardt from Roanoke, VA, to the festival. She will be live painting starting on Saturday at 10:00 a.m., location to be determined. “I have experienced the exhilaration of painting amidst the wilderness, where towering trees and rustling leaves became my companions. It was in those moments that I felt a deep connection with nature, as if it was nurturing and guiding me towards new experiences.” – Jesse Burgardt
The Daffodil Festival is a family affair, with plenty of activities designed to keep kids entertained. From face painting and craft stations to inflatable bounce houses and games, there’s no shortage of fun for the little ones. The county’s mascot, GloBe, will be making appearances throughout the weekend, offering photo opportunities and spreading cheer to festival-goers.
One of the festival’s most anticipated events is the Daffodil Festival Parade, which kicks off the festivities on Saturday morning at 10:00 AM. The parade features colorful floats, marching bands, local organizations, and, of course, plenty of daffodils. Arrive early to secure a good spot along Main Street and watch as the community comes together in a vibrant display of creativity and pride.
Immediately following the parade, head to the Main Stage for the crowning of the 2025 Daffodil Festival Queen and the presentation of festival scholarships. The crowning ceremony is a heartwarming tradition that highlights the festival’s commitment to supporting the community’s youth.
We can’t forget our four-legged friends! After open ceremonies head to the Daffodil Village Stage to watch the Amazing Mutt Show! A crowd favorite where pets take center stage to showcase their talents and charm. Whether it’s performing impressive tricks, strutting in adorable outfits, or simply winning hearts with their overwhelming cuteness, these furry contestants never fail to entertain. It’s a delightful event for animal lovers and a perfect opportunity for pets and their owners to shine in the festival spotlight.
The Daffodil Show, a highlight of the festival, is held at Newington Baptist Church and proudly recognized by the American Daffodil Society. This prestigious show features an impressive display of daffodils from local growers and enthusiasts, showcasing the diverse beauty and varieties of this beloved flower.
