For as long as ships have sailed the seven seas, there have been lighthouses of one sort or another to guide them through treacherous waters. The purpose of lighthouses is to warn ships of dangerous shallows, hazardous coastlines, and hidden reefs. They also act as reliable visual traffic signs and navigation aids by providing safe guidance into ports and harbors.
Lighthouse technology evolved from open wood and coal fires into automated electronic beacons, fundamentally driven by two core developments: illumination efficiency and optical concentration. These progressions dramatically increased beam range, reduced fuel consumption, and paved the way for modern, unstaffed navigational aids.
At first, men use to light fires on hilltops adjacent to harbors to warn mariners of danger. The illumination of early lighthouses was created by burning wood or coal. These were gradually replaced by cleaner-burning candles and whale/fish/vegetable oil lamps. Oil fuels and candles predominated the 1500s. In 1782, the Argand lamp was invented by Aimé Argand. This lamp utilized a hollow circular wick and a glass chimney to provide a brighter, virtually smokeless flame. Electric arc lamps provided a powerful source of light. The early 1900s introduced vaporized oil burners, which drastically increased luminosity. Gustaf Dalén later invented the Dalén light, using dissolved acetylene and a “sun valve” that automatically shut off the gas during daylight hours to conserve fuel. Widespread electric lighting using incandescent bulbs took off in the 1920s and 1930s, eventually replacing fossil fuels entirely.
Optics (magnification and focus) greatly helped with lighthouse visibility. Parabolic reflectors were introduced in the 1700s. These industrial metal bowls gathered light from an internal lamp and focused it into a single, highly efficient directional beam. The most important evolution of the lighthouse beacon was the development of a lens originally invented by French scientist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon in 1748. He proposed the concept of a thinner, lighter, segmented lens. The concept was not put into practical use until 1820, when a French physicist, Augustin-Jean Fresnel, developed what is known as the Fresnel lens. Fresnel independently reinvented and successfully developed this dioptric lens for use in lighthouses The unique Fresnel lens was designed to greatly increase the intensity and range of the light beam, allowing them to be seen from 20 or more miles away. Instead of a single, thick, heavy, and inefficient convex lens, Fresnel created a lens composed of a series of concentric, thin-ringed prisms (or “stepped” lenses) that bend and focus light, significantly reducing the weight and volume of glass needed. This complex arrangement of refracting and reflecting glass prisms concentrated up to 90 percent of a lamp’s light into a powerful horizontal beam. The lens could be floated in a bed of liquid mercury and rotated via weighted clockwork gears, allowing lighthouses to produce distinct, recognizable flash patterns. The Fresnel lens was first used 1823 at the Cordouan Lighthouse in France.
With the advent of electricity, the need for a live lighthouse keeper diminished. Automatic lamp changers were developed to swap out burned-out bulbs. Today, the technology has transitioned entirely to automated, remote-monitored electronic signals. Lighthouses now frequently use self-contained LED arrays, often powered by solar panels and connected to systems like GPS.
The first known lighthouse in recorded history was the Pharos of Alexandria in Egypt, constructed around 280 BC. It stood approximately 450 feet in height. It was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It used an open fire at its summit to guide ships until it was destroyed by earthquakes in the 1300s. The Tower of Hercules in Coruña, Spain was originally built by the Romans in the first century. Restored 1682, it is still in operation to this day. The first lighthouse built in America was located on Little Brewster Island in Boston Harbor, Massachusetts. The Boston Light was originally lit on September 14, 1716.
Lighthouses are often painted in vivid colors or stripes to mark the entrances to bays and harbors and the safe channel in daylight. At night, they are beacons of light piercing through the darkness to guide ships. In poor visibility, some lighthouses sounded thunderous horns, fired cannons while others rang bells, which could be heard for miles.
The structure of lighthouses varies greatly from tall stone, steel or concrete towers to wooden buildings or combination of both. Many were miles from shore while others on the mainland. The Old Cape Henry Lighthouse in Virginia Beach is the first lighthouse in Virginia. It was the first federal construction project authorized under the U.S. Constitution in 1789 and was commissioned by George Washington. Built of Aquia Creek sandstone, it was designed by John McComb, Jr. The light is located on the present Fort Story, near the “First Landing” site of the 1607 English settlers. The original tower still stands and is open for tours as a museum, while a second, newer lighthouse was built in 1881.
The life of a lighthouse keeper was a unique blend of extreme isolation, deep connection to nature, and relentless physical labor. Keepers lived in remote, rugged environments and worked demanding 24/7 schedules to guide mariners safely through treacherous waters. Today, automation has made the historic resident role largely obsolete. Today, the focus on surviving lighthouses is preservation and maintenance.
Historically, the job was far more complex than simply turning on a light. Before electrification, keepers hauled heavy fuel (like whale oil, kerosene, or coal) up spiral stairs, trimmed wicks, wound clockwork mechanisms, and polished thick glass to ensure a clear beacon. Keepers and their assistants worked rotating night shifts (typically four hours each) to ensure the flame remained burning and did not spark a fire.
As federal government employees, keepers were required to meticulously log marine traffic, weather conditions, temperature, and maintenance operations on a daily basis.
During storms or periods of low visibility, keepers had to manually operate deafening foghorns at strict intervals until the weather cleared.
While some lighthouses were stationed on solitary, wave-battered rocks (often called “stag lights”), many coastal stations housed entire families. The keeper’s wife shared the chores and, whenever the keeper had to go to the mainland, she took over his duties. In some instances when the keeper died, the widow took over as keeper of the light. Sometimes, the keeper’s whole family lived at the light.
The profession was frequently passed down from parent to child. Wives and children were vital to the station’s success, often assisting with cleaning the optic glass and spotting ships when the keeper was occupied. In remote locations, keepers and their families would only receive food, fuel, and mail every few months when a supply ship could safely dock. Keepers and their families frequently served as first responders, aiding shipwrecked sailors and launching lifeboats into rough seas.
Keepers generally had a cat to keep them company and control rodents. Many dogs were kept as companions. Some even had goats and cows for milk and chickens for eggs, and on occasion, keepers had exotic animals for their own amusement and to fight the boredom.
Life as a lighthouse keeper can be very lonely and for some incredibly depressing but not for all. Captain Charles A. Sterling, who was the keeper of the Hog Island Lighthouse in Virginia in 1903, was so inspired by the place he authored a 40-page historical pamphlet titled Hog Island, Virginia. He described the pine, oak and red cedar trees, the wildflowers, the wild geese, brants and mallard ducks. The pamphlet documented the island’s unique way of life, recording the local population’s deep religiosity and the residents’ resistance to the changing social norms of the mainland.
Imminent danger was very much a part of life for lighthouse keepers, especially on lighthouses located miles from land on a baron rock or built on concrete foundations in deep water. At any moment, the raging seas can attack and destroy even some of the sturdiest lighthouses. Mother Nature has another threat: ice flows. The worst lighthouse disaster in Virginia’s history was the catastrophic destruction of the Smith Point Lighthouse by massive ice flows in February 1895. Severe winter ice completely sheared the wooden keeper’s cottage and lantern off the screw-pile foundation, carrying the entire structure away. Fortunately, the keepers were able to abandon the lighthouse before the disaster. High seas and a rough wave could destroy a lighthouse. In 1946, a massive rouge wave destroyed the Scotch Cap Lighthouse on Unimak Island, Alaska. A massive wave estimated to be well over 120 feet high completely destroyed this reinforced concrete structure. The catastrophic impact left nothing but the foundation and resulted in the tragic deaths of five Coast Guard crew members.
Prior to 1789, lighthouses were maintained by local towns. The United States Government officially took charge of lighthouses on August 7, 1789, when the First Congress passed the Lighthouse Act. Then United States Coast Guard (USCG) officially took over responsibility for all U.S. lighthouses on July 1, 1939. On that date, the Bureau of Lighthouses (formerly the U.S. Lighthouse Service) was merged with the U.S. Coast Guard, transitioning the operation of lighthouses, lightships, and other navigational aids to the Coast Guard.
Advancing technologies have forced the traditional lighthouse keeper to fade into the pages of history replaced by modern technology and remembered only in logs, journals and old photographs. A new kind of keeper is emerging, one who assures the winds of time and change does not erase the memory of what it was like to be a lighthouse keeper.
